Lot 1399

Lot of Finely Crafted Netsuke and Small Carvings. Japan and China, c. 19th - early 20th century. Items in ivory, and some perhaps marine ivory, bone, or staghorn. All charming examples of their craft. Included are two fine studies of apes, one with a delightfully human expression of annoyance. In staghorn, a choice carving of the aged Gamma Sennin holding his knobby cane, with wonderful "handling patina." Also two humerous bug studies, one also serving as a chop or seal. Also a discoid open work "box," carved in bone, with amuletic floral motifs. The last, either Chinese or Japanese, ca. 1920's, a fob-like pendant from a belt(?), with bold metalwork dragon, set on a celluloid roundel. Inspection recommended. Two pieces with very slight losses, but overall ivories handsomely preserved for their age. Average length: 1-3/4". Lot of 8 items.
Estimated Value $1,200 - 1,500.

Realized $690
