Scenic River Vista in Oil. Italian or German, c. late 18th - 19th century. A woman, with a bundle wrapped in red cloth beside her, sits near remnants of ancient ruins fallen into a river, beneath tall trees amid a hill-studded landscape. Old, darkening varnish has added a somber cast to this rather airy work. Painting shows signs of poor storage and handling, with two small holes at upper left field, some spots of rubbing here and there, and flaking to the bottom edge. A cleaning and moderate conservation would do wonders for the piece. Signed in red at lower left, but faint under darkened varnish, and not easily read. Size: 21" x 16-3/4". Charming work, likely done for the tourist trade.
