Lot 3414

1862, $2 United States Note. . Fr-41. . KL-100. CGA graded Gem Uncirculated 67. This 1862 Hamilton Deuce has exceptional color, we are almost tempted to say "perfect color", which is true of both the paper and the inks. The centering is better than average for the issue on both sides, including complete margins, and the note has few peers in terms of visual impact. A specimen of currency that has earned its CGA Superb Gem quality grade.

Alexander Hamilton's visage appears on numerous American bank notes since he was first honored by a spot on the $5 federal Demand Notes of 1861. In the instance of this $2 we are presented with one of the profile portraits of the first Secretary of the Treasury. Unlike many of his other appearances, this appears to be a youthful rendition.

Something else perhaps worth mentioning concerns the circular 1-2-3 device to the right of his bust. The 2 has been highlighted. The same highlighting can be seen on the 1 of the $1 note of this series. Why, then, the 3? Was the Treasury anticipating a $3 bill. And if so, why did nothing ever come of it? This is one of those tantalizing mysteries for which an explanation may never be forthcoming.
Estimated Value $10,000 - 12,500.

Realized $8,338
