Twain, Mark. The Prince and the Pauper. Boston: James R. Osgood, 1882. First American Edition, first issue with Franklin Press slug on copyright page dated 1881, 8¾" x 7". In publisher's original green cloth binding, gilt stamped with gilt pictorial decoration. Illustrated throughout with 192 images and has 411/412 pages, plus blank page at the end. First state/first printing with uncorrected text as follows: p. 124, line 1, reads "estate" rather than the correct "state"; p. 263, nine lines up from the bottom, reads "Marry I do not think" rather than the later "Marry I do think"; p. 362, three lines up from the bottom, the first word is "reigned" rather than the later corrected "reined." There is rubbing to edges and corners, some rubs and light staining to cover; spine gilding in VG condition but showing wear, with minor losses to the top and bottom of the spine cloth. The book is clean and reasonably tight. Overalll a good copy of a highly collectible Twain. BAL 3402, Fox 204 (Ex Libris).
