Lot 554

Historical Victorian Era British Snider Musket in .577 Caliber. A breach loading conversion of an 1860 Enfield muzzle loading rifle. The Snider conversions were done in 1866 and 1867 to allow for the use of paper and metal cartridges. They were first employed in Britain's war with Ethiopia, then Abyssinia, and continued in service until the 1880s. This example is marked on the stock for Canada and may have been used by British or Canadian soldiers against Irish rebels during the Fenian Raid troubles in Canada in 1870. The lock plate is marked with a crown, "V.R" and "1860 Enfield" and there are numerous proofmarks on the metal and wood. The stock has minor repair near the brass butt plate and the metal fittings show light marks and wear as does the stock, but overall good condition. An impressive artifact of the many small wars of the Victorian Age.
Estimated Value $900 - 1,100.
