Marshall, George C (1880-1959) Five-star general and U.S. Army Chief of Staff and in World War II. As U.S. Secretary of State (1947-1949), he originated the European Recovery Progrlam (Marshall Plan) in 1947. He was U.S. Secretary of Defense (1950-1951); winner of the 1953 Nobel peace prize.
