Lot 1995

1776 Continental Dollar in Pewter. EG FECIT type. Newman 3-D Rarity-3. PCGS graded AU-58. Frosty light silvery gray with mint luster covering the protected areas on both sides. A choice, defect-free planchet with only a hint of friction on the highest points of the design. The EG FECIT feature on the label is strong except for minor strike weakness on the second E. Struck slightly off center to K-5 on the obverse and K-9 on the reverse, the difference due to the reverse being rotated 110 degrees CCW from a perfect head-to-foot orientation. Intermediate die state with a weak die crack through several of the reverse links. A popular and historic early American issue. Apparently a pattern for the first silver-dollar sized coins ever proposed for the United States. Listed at page 81 of the "Redbook."
Estimated Value $20,000 - 30,000.
