Lot 2923

Antoninus Pius, 138-161 AD. Gold Aureus (7.16 g), Rome mint, struck 151-152 AD. Rare. Bare head of Pius facing left. Reverse: Togate Pius standing left, holding globus; TR POT XV COS IIII. RIC --; C. --; BMCRE 743a; Calico 1664. Perfectly centered and struck, on almost perfectly round flan. Coin retains abundant luster, combined with a sensitive, very high relief portrait of Pius. A truly choice work of art among the many mundane examples of his long and plentiful coinage. Extremely Fine plus.
Estimated Value $8,000 - 9,000.
