Attica. Athens, c. 460-440 BC. AR Tetradrachm (17.19 g). Head of Athena right, in crested helmet with leaves and palmette decoration. Reverse: Owl right, sprig of olive behind; ethnic at right, all within incuse square. Obverse close to Starr plate XXII, no. 2'; the reverse that of 3'; Dewing 1593. Bold strike on ample flan, perfectly centered. Pristine and as found. With intact black hoard patina. The portrait in a very pretty archaic style; the owl an absolute delight! A gem! Superb Extremely Fine, virtually as struck.
