Lot 1864

1858 Quarter Dollar Round Liberty Head. . BG-800, Rarity 8. PCGS graded AU-53. A lightly toned round Liberty head fractional. A large crude head example similar to the more commonly "dated reverses" of 1859-71. Seven stars arranged irregularly around Liberty, with the one below the hair bun close to the head. Extremely rare variety, only discovered in recent years. Cloaked in mystery, once ignored by mainstream collecting, the privately made fractional gold of California is one of the most interesting fields in American numismatics. About these thin slivers of gold, denominated in dollars, half dollars and quarter dollars, relatively little is known of their role in day to day business transactions. Authorities differ whether they served as money or were chiefly sold to tourists and coin collectors as curiosities. Regardless of their real intent, California fractional gold is an adventure to collect and these historic pieces have attracted legions of numismatists. Pop 1; 1 in 55. BG- 800. Rarity 8. Only 2 graded by PCGS (PCGS # 10964) .
Estimated Value $3,000 - 3,400.
