Lot 1761

1893-CC $20 Liberty. NGC graded MS-61. Only 18,402 coins minted. Natural golden toning on both sides, there is a small mark on Liberty's throat area, another on the cheek, and a few luster "grazes" in the frost of the open field. The 1893-CC is the swan song issue of the Carson City Mint. The government (under the second Cleveland administration) had reached a point where the expense charts sloped sharply upward, and so decided to trim the budget. Carson was on the front line of this budget-cutting. All the same, this mint's double eagle coinage circulated extensively in the West and also was used in the export trade, probably mostly the latter. Today, Mint State coins are only occasionally found (though not considered rare, per se). Most pieces are very attractive to collectors. The low mintage of 1893-CC has always made this a popular issue. Pop 112; 114 finer, 94 in 62, 19 in 63, 1 in 64 (PCGS # 9023) .
Estimated Value $4,500 - 5,000.
