Lot 1437

1873 Pattern Trade Dollar. Silver, reeded edge. . J-1310. . P-1453. NGC graded Proof 65 Rarity 4. Popular Barber's Indian Princess in an old holder. Light blue with gold toning. William Barber, in taking a page out of the deceased James B. Longacre's book, modified Longacre's Indian Princess for this engagingly beautiful rendition of a Trade Dollar. Sadly, it never went beyond the pattern stage. A first-rate gem, the coin is permeated with rich colors and rolling mirror sparkle that flows across the fresh surfaces. Satisfactorily struck for the date, too, and in fact about as excellent as this scarce Pattern is ever found, the coin's designer would have been proud to stand at the podium alongside the smiling, effervescent auctioneer as this is offered to today's auction buyers. Pop 1; 2 finer in 66, none finer at NGC (PCGS # 61596) .
Estimated Value $9,000 - 10,000.

Realized $8,625
