1836 Pattern Dollar. Silver, plain edge. . J-60. . P-65. PCGS graded Proof 62, Rarity 1. Original example with a hint of light toning. This is a splendid silver gray specimen with a faint golden zephyr-like veil of iridescence on both sides. Well struck for the popular 1836 name on base variety, certainly much better-quality than similar third-party graded examples offered in recent years; we find it worthy of strong bidder attention. The name of Christian Gobrecht, the third person to occupy the post of chief engraver at the Philadelphia Mint, is well known to collectors today and is reflected in such popular terms as Gobrecht dollar and The Gobrecht Journal, the latter being the publication of the Liberty Seated Collectors Club. Among Pattern coins his contributions are at once important, beautiful, and extensive. Most familiar are his seated Liberty coins, first made in the form of this 1836 silver dollar.
