Lot 421

1937-D Buffalo Nickel. 3 legged. AU-50. One of the most popular Buffalo nickel errors, the 3 legged bison was the result of a quick-fix to a common minting problem. Having a daily order to fill of nickels, the coiner noticed that the reverse die had clashed badly with the obverse (this occurs when the dies strike each other without a planchet between them), with design elements of the obverse now visible on the reverse die. Normally, the dies would be replaced, but instead they were carelessly filed down, accidently removing the forward leg of the bison. All that remains is the hoof and lower shoulder.

Realized $604
