Sale 4

Lot 1938

1851 $20 Liberty. MS-62. Light hairlines take this out of the Choice categories, but this is still a delightful coin. None of the usual bagmarking, just a few tiny abrasions. Bright yellow gold, but the cartwheel is subdued. The strike is medallic--the stars are well detailed, Liberty's hair stands out in high relief, and even the feathers on the eagle's neck and its eye are crisp. The rims, too, are sharp and mark-free. As MS63s are in the 20-grand league, and 64s are much more if you can find one, this seems a fine alternative for the true Americana buff. A classic.
