Choice 1856 Flying Eagle Cent. PCGS graded MS-64. This looks like a Beck Hoard coin to us, and it also looks more like a Proof than a business or commercial strike. "Commercial strike"? That term has been suggested recently to replace "business strike." Okay, but no 1856 flying eagles were made for commerce, were they? They were patterns. This coin possesses far too much depth of detail (note around the eagle's eye especially) to be a business strike. The surfaces are vaguely mirrorlike, as usual for these Proofs. They are an appealing tawny brown with lots of gold shining through. The reverse is even nicer, truly Gem, and it yells out "I'm a Proof" more so than the eagle side. This piece is also in a 1st Generation PCGS case. Whatever you decide, examine it closely and enjoy--for this is a handsome and choice specimen of this hugely popular, key date.
