Lot 6

1652 Pine Tree Shilling. Large planchet. . Noe-8 Rarity-3. NGC graded MS-63. Variety with a fancy top on the 5 in the date. Frosty light silvery gray with darker bluish steel gray toning in protected areas. Very well centered on a large, round planchet that was not clipped or mistreated in any way. The planchet is slightly wavy, as always thanks to the rocker press used to strike these pieces. Every element of the design is contained on the planchet, which is extremely unusual. Later die state with several areas of crumbling on the reverse. The best identifying mark on this piece is a tiny depression in the planchet near the rim at the top of the obverse. Certainly one of the finest examples of this popular early colonial issue. Weight listed on the NGC label as 70.96 grains.
Estimated Value $20,000 - 40,000.
Ex F. C. C. Boyd-John J. Ford, Jr.
