Lot 2371

1912-S $5 Indian. PCGS graded MS-64 PQ. A frosty mint beauty glittering with luster and rich golden orange mint color. The certified population of this issue dwindles rapidly above the MS63 grade level, a situation that is caused partly by the inferior striking quality that characterizes most representatives of this issue. Yet, the 1912-S offered here is one of, if not the best produced gold half eagles we've had the pleasure to offer since the 20th century. The reader should take note, however, that the present example does have a little softness in the detail of the lower headdress feathers. The strike is extraordinarily sharp throughout the reverse, though, and, were it not for minor softness at the mintmark, the impression would be nearly full. The luster is also bright, frosty, gorgeous for the issue, the surface "showy" with its smooth texture aided by the rich toning. A few stray abrasions can be picked out using a magnifying glass but they are of little consequence. A Premium Quality coin. Pop 20;1 finer in 65. (PCGS # 8524) .
Estimated Value $20,000 - 24,000.
