Lot 2211

1915 $2.50 Indian. NGC graded Proof 66. The 1915 quarter eagle Proof is considered by most authorities to be the crucial date in the Sandblast Proof series from 1908 through 1915. Only 100 pieces were struck (the lowest in the series), less an unknown number that were melted in early 1916. Somewhere in the neighborhood of 50 to 60 coins exist today in varying grades.

This example features warm lemon-yellow surfaces with no contact marks or obvious hairlines to injure the beauty of the piece. Serenely appealing and well struck, this piece possesses both technical quality and aesthetic merit from the way the surface "facets" sparkle under reflected light -- always a highly sought after combination. This is a rare opportunity for the connoisseur to acquire the key date in the series at a minor premium over what the most plentiful issue will sell for. Pop 13; 3 in 67; 1 in 68. (PCGS # 7964) .
Estimated Value $22,000 - 24,000.
