Lot 2197

1911-D $2.50 Indian. PCGS graded MS-65. Set in PCGS holder 10769325. Nice light golden toning. With undisputed eminence as the key-date issue of its type, this conditionally rare Gem would serve as a linchpin in any Indian $2.50 gold piece collection. The strike is impressively sharp and resolutely full, perhaps being most significant over the all-important reverse mintmark. Both sides alternate between khaki-gold and orange-gold colors depending on the angle of light incidence. Fully lustrous, satiny in sheen and best of all silent on the subject of distracting abrasion. This important Quarter Eagle is sure to please even the most discerning buyer. Trends is $110,000!

Only 55,680 pieces produced. The 1911-D is universally (and rightly) regarded as the rarest Indian quarter eagle. No other issue in this series attracts more publicity or commands higher premiums than this Denver Mint delivery in Gem quality.

The quarter eagle is the last of the three originally authorized gold denominations struck in the United States Mint, and the initial examples were not delivered until 1796. (The first half eagles and eagles were coined the preceding year). Much like the silver quarter, the quarter eagle, being an in-between denomination, was not overly popular with bullion depositors, banks and major exporters during the early decades of Philadelphia Mint operations. Yearly coinage remained both limited and erratic. Beginning in the latter part of 1834, after a revision in the coinage standard, however, production of this denomination did increase somewhat to levels that would remain more-or-less standard through the denomination's end in 1929. The quarter eagle is collected by eight major types, some of which were produced in only a single year: capped bust right, no stars (1796 only); capped bust right, stars (1796-1807); capped bust left (1808 only); capped head left, large diameter (1821-27); capped head left, reduced diameter (1829-34); classic (1834-39); Liberty (1840-1907); and Indian (1908-29). Pop 15; 3 in 66. (PCGS # 7943) .
Estimated Value $75,000 - 80,000.
