Lot 2017

1900 Lafayette Dollar. PCGS graded MS-64. Brilliant white. Likely an early strike from new dies, just estimating from the details. The surfaces are vivid silver in hue. A sharp impression was left by the recoil of the dies that struck this handsome piece. Other than for a couple of tiny ticks on Washington's face, the surface approaches gem quality and should be viewed favorably by all bidders (PCGS # 9222) .

According to Q. David Bowers, who has made a study of these, "The 1900 Lafayette dollar is very unusual, indeed unique among coinage of its era, for the dies were made by hand. The motifs were impressed on the obverse and reverse, and then by use of hand punches the dates and numerals were added around the border -- in the old-style process generally in use in the 1830s and before, but long obsolete by 1899."
Estimated Value $3,000 - 3,300.
