Lot 2

1652 Massachusetts Oak Tree Shilling IN at bottom. . Noe 5 Rarity-2. NGC graded MS-61. Glossy dark grayish steel with lighter gray toning on the highpoints. No planchet flaws and the planchet is almost perfectly round. The only marks are some very fine abrasions on the unstruck portion of the planchet at the top of the obverse where the die edge (sometimes looks like a cud break) was carefully smoothed down, possibly prior to release from the mint. The obverse is slightly off center to the bottom, as always, but the centering is better than normal with only a few letters of the legend slipping very slightly off the edge. The reverse is better positioned on the planchet and everything is complete. An outstanding example, certainly one of the finest known. Superior to the Hain examples and comparable to either of the Ford pieces. Weight listed as 66.4 grains on the NGC label.
Estimated Value $4,000 - 8,000.
Ex Fred Baldwin 1958-Norweb collection, Bowers & Merena 10/12/87:1161.
