Lot 1983

1939-S Oregon Trail Half Dollar. PCGS graded MS-65. Untoned. Both the peripheries and the central reverse are impressive for their detail, and the frosty textured surfaces are Gem quality. Silver luster exactly as it came from the dies radiates in all directions from the surfaces of this attractive Oregon (PCGS # 9354) .

The Oregon Trail was one of the key overland migration routes on which pioneers traveled across the North American continent on foot, horseback or in wagons in order to settle new parts of the United States during the 19th century. The Trail spanned over half the continent, measuring 2,170 miles west through territories and land later to become six U.S. states (Missouri, Kansas, Nebraska, Wyoming, Idaho, and Oregon). It's heyday was from 1841 to 1869. Once the first transcontinental railroad was completed in 1869, the use of this trail by long distance travelers diminished as the railroad slowly replaced it.
Estimated Value $500 - 575.
