Lot 1551

1795 Flowing Hair Dollar. 3 leaves beneath each wing. . B-6, BB-25. NGC graded AU-55. Light silvery- grey toning. An incredibly beautiful and highly original specimen, a point of reference for other examples that share this grade. The best part of it is, the strike is bold and crisp, quite full in the hair and stars, similar detail shows in the eagle, which is rare in a series where few of the head and back curl details show fully.

The obverse of BB-25 (also used on BB-24), has Liberty's flowing hair in six curls, 3rd and 4th close together; the lowest curl barely misses a point of first star, but continues on to touch and slightly pass a second point of same star. The second curl from bottom turns downward pointing to space between two points of second star. Wide date, 79 closest. E in LIBERTY punched over an earlier erroneous R. The Y in LIBERTY is higher than the adjacent T. Foot of R in LIBERTY shortened from a broken punch. Pop 2; none finer for variety.
Estimated Value $20,000 - 22,000.

Realized $26,450
