Lot 1475

1907-D Barber Half Dollar. NGC graded MS-68. Set in NGC holder 563586-001. Exquisite super gem with magnificent toning. The centers are delicate golden, deepening to the borders which are electric blue. A fantastic specimen, Mint State, with booming luster on both sides. Light golden to magenta are the controlling colors here, changing to lovely blue and gunmetal-gray at the borders. The strike is excellent.

This piece traces its provenance to the collection formed by the late John Jay Pittman, as cataloged by David W. Akers, and presented at auction in 1998 -- one of the most notable coin collections ever assembled. Pittman, an employee of Eastman Kodak, was not a wealthy man. However, he did have an eye for top quality, being one of a rare breed of buyers who emphasized eye appeal, exceptional surface characteristics, and the like long before it was understood by everyday collectors. When his collection was sold, it brought a fortune -- connoisseurship rewarded in a most dramatic way!

From David Akers Numismatics' sale of the John Jay Pittman Collection, May 1998, Lot 1614; later in ANR's Jan. 2005 sale. Pop 1; none finer.
Estimated Value $20,000 - 25,000.
Ex: Pittman.
