Lot 1033

1912-D Lincoln Cent. NGC graded MS-65 Red. Fiery red. Uncommonly well preserved for this scarce Denver Mint issue, both sides retain full mint bloom in shimmering medium-orange color. What's more, the coin is sharply struck on the obverse, with bold reverse definition despite having been struck from a slightly worn die. There are no grade-limiting blemishes, no spots, only explosive mint luster and color.

A semi key-date issue in the Lincoln Cent series, the 1912-D has a relatively low mintage of 10.4 million pieces. Examples are scarce at all levels of preservation, while in the finer circulated and Mint State grades they are nothing short of rare. Uncirculated survivors are frequently beleaguered by varying degrees of incompleteness due to die wear, so overall bold or, better yet, sharp examples are always in demand among leading Lincoln Cent buyers.

The first major type in the Lincoln Cent series is the Wheat Ears Reverse of 1909-1958. This portion of the series includes some of the most readily recognizable and popular 20th century United States coins, namely the 1909-S V.D.B., 1943 Copper and 1955 Doubled Die. All issues of this type enjoy a strong following among numismatic buyers; such is the popularity of the Lincoln Cent in today's rare coin market. While many of the Philadelphia Mint and later-date deliveries are easy enough to obtain through the MS-65 Red grade level, all issues of this type are rare in the finest Mint State grades. This is one series that has proved particularly popular among collectors competing for high rankings on the PCGS Set Registry, with the result that conditionally rare examples frequently command very strong premiums among buyers. Pop 24; 3 finer in 66. (PCGS # 2455) .
Estimated Value $2,000 - 2,200.
