Holmes, Oliver Wendell Jr (1841-1935) Supreme Court Justice for nearly 30 years, during which time he made great contributions to the changing concepts of law. Autograph Letter Signed "OWH" on engraved letterhead of the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court 3¼ pp, 10x8", Boston, 10 May 1898. Fine. To "Dear Hibernia," who was Lady Castleton, Holmes' mistress, demonstrating his humor and his feelings toward England, Socialism, war, and materialism. In part: "…You will have heard about Dewey's exploit - it took some sand to sail in as he did….war disturbs larger moneyed interests and so encounters greater obstacles which…become articulate in the form of moralizing….Men care for ideals more than for life - Property is an ideal. That is how it sacrifices lives - pleasing paradox - for which I make you no extra charge…." Much more content.
