Lot 2849

1882 Trade Dollar. PCGS graded Proof 64. Wonderful rainbow toning that covers the surface in a dappled pattern like something out of the impressionest era of painting. Only 1,097 coins minted all as proofs. A boldly struck fresh-surfaced coin whose great depth of detail in the strike complements the equally fresh mint bloom. Proof data: By year's end 1,097 Proofs had been struck, the third highest Proof mintage in the series, and one of just three Proof production quantities to break the 1,000 mark. Demand for them seems to have been heaviest earlier in the year, as the monthly production figures indicate (courtesy of the Bowers encyclopedia): "January: none; February: 393; March: 277; April: 49; May: 70; June: 23; July: 30; August: 10; September: 20; October: 20; November: 40; and December: 165. There is the possibility that some may have been melted, possibly part of the December mintage." Pop 102; 65 finer; 41 in 65; 19 in 66; 5 in 67. (PCGS # 7062) .
Estimated Value $3,500 - 4,000.
