Lot 2840

1876 Trade Dollar. NGC graded Proof 65. Nice even toning on both sides. Only 1,150 proofs struck. This conditionally rare contribution to the Trade dollar section is sharp and mirror deep with rich frosty devices surrounded by pools of mirror reflection. The strike is free of censure, being sharp in all areas including the key high points of the design, and all stars and letters. Mintage increased somewhat in 1876 over 1875 and before falling back again in 1877. This occurred when the mint received large orders for purposes of sale to non-collectors drawn to the celebrations held around the country at the time of the 1876 Centennial festivities. Yet despite the increased mintage, there a few Gem quality examples offered, which is attested to by the low population figure in this grade. Pop 16; 5 finer; 4 in 66; 1 in 67.
Estimated Value $7,000 - 8,000.
