Lot 2600

1908-S Barber Half Dollar. NGC graded MS-66. Delicate lavender toning. From stem to stern a beautifully toned gem with impressive mint sparkle over spotless surfaces. Well struck on the main devices. Just a bit shy of a full strike here and there on the reverse, once again each side is well balanced and shows equal beautiful toning.

The 1908-S is among the rarest late dates in the Barber half series, almost unavailable in MS66 condition. Why this is true for the 1908-S, even when more than 1.6 million pieces were struck, is one of those mysteries. Attrition, it seems, has winnowed the number of high grade examples that are available. Such rarities can often pass unnoticed for years by collectors like figures in a dream, before one hits the auction block and the cognoscenti unleash their bidding fury like a Fourth of July fireworks display. Pop 4; 1 finer in 6.
Estimated Value $5,500 - 6,000.
The Greenhill Collection.
