1895 Barber Half Dollar. NGC graded Proof 68 Star. A beautiful gem toned barber half. As pretty a coin you could wish for. This is a spectacular coin, indeed a bold Proof striking! It is a coin that has been preserved careful except for the maturation of gorgeous toning that developed over more than a century. The toning strikes us as all-original, which is what bidders of high-caliber Barber Proofs have a preference for as seen in the prices realized notices. The toning ranges through the more typical shades of "old silver" iridescence from deep golden browns to unusual and lovely shades of pastel lavender and blue. There are no hairlines on either side. For that matter, the fields are deeply and perfectly mirrored with desirable mint frost prominent on the devices. As is often the case, this yields gorgeous cameo contrast. A total of 880 Proofs were made in 1895. It stands to reason, then, we are inclined to look upon this remarkable Proof 68 as being exceedingly special.
