1803 Draped Bust Half Dollar. NGC graded MS-64 Overton-103. NGC #2032604-005. Nice original toning on both sides. Seldom seen this nice. One of three Large 3 die pairings for the date, Overton-103 is recognized by its reverse, which has an arrowhead past the right upright of the N in UNITED. Colorful golden-brown and navy-blue shades overlay the light slate-gray patina. The main devices are boldly struck, including the breast feathers, although a few of the stars on the obverse do not possess crisp centers. There is only one short mark on the shoulder, as the surfaces are impressively clean and beautiful. Struck from clashed dies, with raised lines from the shield throughout Liberty's ear; a remarkable coin in this outstanding condition, truly remarkable!

1803 Draped Bust Half Dollars are scarce in higher grades, but are most often available in Fine through EF condition. The Overton Condition Census for O-103 is headed by a pair of AU50 examples, curiously, meaning that the authors of that book weren't apprised of this MS64 specimen. As an issue, the Large 3 becomes rare in AU, and attractive Mint State pieces are extremely rare. The present coin is the single finest certified by either major service. Pop 1; none finer.
Estimated Value $70,000 - 75,000.
