Lot 2436

1924-S $20 St. Gaudens. PCGS graded MS-64. Lovely rich golden toning. Radiant and exhibiting little if any color other than warm-glow gold. A very pleasing example of this scarce issue. The 1924-S is a double eagle with a past. One of several in the middle to late years of the 1920s, at one time it was believed to be among the greatest rarities of them all, handily topping the MCMVII Ultra High Relief and the rare Proofs of 1883 and 1884 twenties. The appearance of a specimen at auction was a moment to strike a gong to get everyone's attention. Today, following the release of overseas hoards, the 1924-S remains elusive, but sufficient quantities exist that they come on the market frequently, although in lower Mint State grades for the most part.

The 1924-S is very similar to the 1924-D in terms of overall rarity and rarity in the gem category. The major difference between the two issues is that the 1924-S is scarcer in MS-64 than the 1924-D. A mintage of 2,927,500 coins from San Francisco this year. Many were melted; others were exported to Europe and South America during the monetary crises of 1929-38. Pop 150; 3 finer; 2 in 65; 1 in 67. (PCGS # 9179) .
Estimated Value $13,000 - 14,000.

Realized $13,225
