Lot 2266

1876-S $20 Liberty. PCGS graded MS-62. A blace with luster. Somer natural coppery areas of tone on both sides. A couple of tiny bagmarks. This beautiful coin sums up nicely the experience of the gold satin luster on a well presented and fully struck Type 2 twenty from the "Gilded Age" of the 1870s. It is the kind of double eagle that collectors expect to find in the grade. Elusive as a choicer coin and better. It is easy to see this piece was delivered a hard blow by the dies, or as some researchers believe, the dies were nearly new and carefully set in the equipment to impart the requisite force, and which imparted their crispness to the struck planchet. Pop 317; 85 finer. (PCGS # 8978) .
Estimated Value $2,800 - 3,000.
The Greenhill Collection.

Realized $3,220
