Lot 2223

1901 $10 Liberty. NGC graded Proof 64. A nice example with a cameo effect. This is a richly golden nearly all-brilliant example whose surfaces are drenched in sunbright golden shades. We have no complaints about the strike, all features possessing a precision in the detail that could only be the result from Proof fabrication methods. Carefully preserved in finish throughout, both sides possess full mirrored gleam and sparkle that appears as "orange peel" texture at oblique light angles. One of only a few choice survivors from the original mintage, no more than half of which are believed extant. A few light hairlines are otherwise of no consequence given the visual impact this lovely Proof has on the viewer.

On the 1901 Proofs, the low date slants up to right, open 9. Bases of 19, below top of 0 show repunching. Die polish before eye and below ear. Reverse: Pattern of die polish as in 1900, but without the slanting die file marks in seventh white stripe or area of horizontal stripes just above it. 85 proofs minted. Pop 2; none finer.
Estimated Value $15,000 - 17,000.
