Lot 1813

1860-C $2.50 Liberty. NGC graded MS-62. Nice untoned example. An refreshingly clean surfaced, mar-free example of this low-mintage rarity, one of just 7,469 struck. The onset of the American Civil War insured that many were lost, stolen or melted during that time of trouble. Satiny yellow gold luster on the obverse with similar frosty reverse. A few very minor surface nicks are noted, qualifying it for the Mint State 62 grade, but the fact remains that few finer 1860-C quarter eagles are recorded. Both sides show exceptional design definition with only the barest weakness among the hair and among the lower details of the eagle's claws and arrow feathers, this being typical for the issue. This example ranks high in the condition census for the date. Housed in NGC holder 1293449-039. Pop 3; 2 finer in 63.
Estimated Value $19,000 - 21,000.
