1844-C $2.50 Liberty. NGC graded MS-61. A hint of light toning. The 1844-C is one of the most elusive Charlotte quarter eagles, and a trouble to find in high levels of preservation, just ask around. A fire at the North Carolina Mint on July 28, 1844 forced a shut down until early 1846. A classic rarity in all Uncirculated grades, the present specimen displays naturally toned greenish to yellow-gold surfaces and a decided lovely look of "old gold." The clean appearance seems to account for the beauty of the piece, and its Mint State assessment solid, without questions.
