Lot 439

1936 Oregon Trail Half Dollar. NGC graded MS-66. Pleasant, almost cheery silver satin frost display lots of fresh white color still streaming through the natural russet and gray patina that keeps it so well preserved. Struck with exactitude rarely found on an Oregon issue, with only marginal design softness at the Indian's head and a few of the features of the migrant family on the reverse. Settlers in the early 1830s and 1840s, before the transcontinental railway, had a choice: a 2,000 mile walk through hostile lands or a year-long boat ride around the tip of South America to get to the promised land of the west Coast of Oregon and Washington. This commemorative marks the less expensive but arduous land route which so many took.
Estimated Value $290 - 300.

Realized $380
