Lot 3995

1855-O $20 Liberty. NGC graded EF-45. Bold detail. Lightly toned. A few scattered marks. Adding to those results, a word about strike: this piece has all but needle-sharp devices, with gorgeous detail on the eagle, shield, stars, sun rays. Although the 1855-O is sometimes overshadowed by the more talked about 1854-O rarity, this date is sandwiched between two of the classic rarities (1856-O is also noteworthy) and is very difficult to find in any grade from a mintage of only 8,000 pieces. Bowers, in his recent detailed history of the double eagle series, reports that fewer than a hundred pieces are believed to exist. Most are Very Fine and a few Extremely Fine. Even a few of the great "name" collection formed over the last 50 to 100 years rarely account for this date in other than worn, sometimes scruffy condition. The present offering is one of the most pleasing that will be offered this year, so take heed. Pop 7; 21 finer.
Estimated Value $15,000 - 18,000.
