Lot 3863

1903 $5 Liberty. NGC graded Proof 65 Cameo. Untoned and well struck. 1 tiny lint mark in the right obverse field. A sparkling gem. Only 154 proofs minted. Pop 7; 10 finer. Bright and lustrous yellow reddish gold with sweeping mirrors and frosted (not "all brilliant") motifs combining here in a strong display of cameo contrast. (Beginning in 1902, the recesses in the dies were left in their polished state by mint employees rather than treated with acid to create "frost", therefore frosted cameos from this era are much scarcer.) We heartily concur with NGC's grade of Proof 65. All things told, this beautiful gem is both exciting and fascinating to the eye when beheld in person, and we encourage all interested parties, even those who have only a cursory interest in Proof gold, to take a moment with this resplendent 1903 $5 gold piece.
Estimated Value $20,000 - 23,000.

Realized $25,300
