Lot 3299

1883 Hawaiian Half Dollar. NGC graded MS-61 Prooflike. Looks like a proof. The satin surfaces ripple with original luster and only minimal bagmarks. The coin is untoned and silvery. Far from the normal example with its weak area of beard detail on the jaw, this issue shows complete detail throughout with no signs of weakness. The coinage of Hawaii was from a special government bond issue of 1880 and caused quite a stir in the islands when it was learned that the $100,000 seignorage on the coins (the 10% profit made from the cost of the bullion being less than the face value of the coins) went secretly to the crafty Honolulu banker and sugar baron, Claus Spreckels.
Estimated Value $1,000 - 1,250.
The Emile A. Tartakow Collection.

Realized $2,070
