Lot 1779

1874-S Liberty Seated Quarter Dollar. Arrows. PCGS graded MS-65. A well struck and intensely frosty mint gem from the San Francisco Mint, basically untoned. Although essentially brilliant, the smooth, satiny surfaces show a decided tinge of light silvery antique gray color cast at certain angles. Judged from an aesthetic standpoint, the coin is also possessed of a much finer strike than is typically found for a coin struck this year.

In 1874, the worst grasshopper plague in U. S. history scourged the Great Plains from the Dakotas to northern Texas in almost biblical numbers. Yet that did not stop a stream of hopeful immigrants when the discovery of gold brought thousands of gold seekers into the Black Hills reservation in the Dakota Territory. America's history is interleaved with gold rushes, silver finds, and other such enriching possibilities. Pop 47; 25 in 66; 1 in 67. (PCGS # 5495) .
Estimated Value $2,500 - 3,000.
