Lot 1772

1870 Liberty Seated Quarter Dollar. NGC graded Proof 66. Beautiful rainbow toning on both sides. Well detailed for this more difficult early Proof, with wonderful golden-orange centers on the obverse that deepen into highlights of purple and electric blue. The colors one sees, in the photos and first-hand, add immeasurably to the appeal of this remarkable spot-free Gem. Only 1,000 Proofs minted. Pop 7; 3 in 67.

U.S. population in 1870 was 38,558,371. Out of this number, there were only 1,000 Proof sets ordered from the Philadelphia Mint. America was expanding rapidly in those days. Between 1870 and 1880, 3 million immigrants came to the U.S. Americans also liked to use their rifles a lot to shoot things. Between 1870 and 1880, one million buffalo were slaughtered annually. As always, Americans wanted to grow rich. One of the most famous rich men of the time, John D. Rockefeller, and his associates founded the Standard Oil Company of Ohio in 1870. It was capitalized at $1 million. In time, it would grow to absorb most other oil companies in America.
Estimated Value $2,600 - 3,000.
