Lot 1745

1805 Draped Bust Quarter Dollar. PCGS graded MS-64. Lustrous with alternating electric blue and golden-violet toning. Pop 6; 1 better in MS65. A refreshingly bold and attractive specimen of this early bust quarter that spares no compromises with its rich toning iridescence on both sides. Strike is much sharper than average for the issue as well, with the only minor weakness at a few stars above the eagle and in some of the clouds which are opposite the high point of the obverse. Quarters of this design, with heraldic or large eagle reverse, minted from 1804 through 1807 inclusive, are typically very weakly struck. Very few have needle-sharp detail (PCGS # 5313) .

The peak of the 5 in the date does not touch the bust on Browning-3, and the final obverse star is distant from the bust. Mint-made die cracks often connect the tops of STATES and the bases of the digits in the date. A die line from the stem reaches the serif of the C in the denomination, and the I and T in LIBERTY have broken feet.
Estimated Value $24,000 - 28,000.
