Goldberg Coins and Collectibles

Sale 34

Lot 946

1848-C $2.50 Liberty. NGC graded MS-62. Semi prooflike surfaces. Mostly untoned. This handsome offering should make a highly prized addition to a collection, it being a combination of choice Mint quality and, per the photographs, a photogenic example, par excellence. Struck in warm yellow gold. A choice example, but to even a wider audience this year is important because of its high grade. In his reference on the series Douglas Winter listed only two pieces that he believed to be Uncirculated, with the notation that both listings might refer to the same coin!

The mintage of 1848-C, which amounted to 16,788, seems to harbinger the possibility that at least a few dozen Mint State pieces are in numismatic hands, or at least should be. However, they are not. A little mystery. Pop 5; none higher at NGC. (PCGS # 7750) .
Estimated Value $14,000 - 16,000.

Realized $16,100
