Lot 776

1918-S Liberty Standing Quarter Dollar. 8 over 7. NGC graded AU-55. Very lightly toned. This is one of the classic rarities of the 20th century. Few overdates were created, and auction appearances are eagerly followed by collectors. Perhaps one thousand of these exist, the grading services have seen slightly more than 500 in all grades. This lustrous coin with its splendid "old silver" patina, has the minute diagnostics noted in the Breen Encyclopedia. The overdate feature is plain with a glass. Apparently in the rush to get dies prepared, one 1918 was struck by a 1917 master hub and then a 1918 hub (during die making, it takes several blows by the hub to impress the design into the hard die steel.

While the famous low mintage 1916 traditionally gets all the applause as the key to the standing Liberty series, examples of 1916 were saved in greater numbers, since Gems are usually available. The 1918-S overdate, on the contrary, is almost never offered in Mint condition, with a choice About Uncirculated specimen the preferred condition for a date set of these attractive quarter dollars. Pop 16.
Estimated Value $10,000 - 11,000.
