Lot 775

1918-S Liberty Standing Quarter Dollar. 8 over 7. PCGS graded MS-63. Nice untoned example. This is one of the grand rarities of the last century; it so happens, few overdates were created then, and all are eagerly sought by collectors. Perhaps one thousand of these exist, mainly well circulated, the grading services having seen slightly more than 500 in all grades. For this reason, it is likely that more are out there sitting in coin albums, having been purchased decades ago. This one has the minute diagnostic features noted in the Breen Encyclopedia. The overdate is plain, clear and crisp with or without a glass of sherry. Apparently in the hurry to get dies made, one 1918 die received a strike from the 1917 master hub, then the hub was replaced with the correct 1918 hub, and the die was imprinted again, creating an 8 over 7 error date! No one noticed the mistake, or if they did, they drank a glass of sherry, winked once or twice, and told no one about it. The die was then shipped off and put into production at the San Francisco Mint, where no one there noticed it, either, much to the amusement of collectors!

Popular key date. Pop 20; 16 in 64; 3 in 65; 2 in 66 (PCGS # 5726) .
Estimated Value $30,000 - 35,000.
