Lot 653

1843 Liberty Seated Dime. NGC graded Proof 64. Lovely shades of gold, lilac and blue toning. The 1843 is just a little less rare than the 1842 but that should not imply that this date is all that much easier to acquire in Proof because it is not. There are as few as 10 Proofs surviving from 1843 but even Eliasberg, Lovejoy, and Starr did not own one (and their collections included some exceptionally rare Dimes). Why there should be a few more surviving Proof 1843 than 1842 Dimes is a mystery since there were no more collectors around in the former than the latter year. Nor was 1843 a special year that might have occasioned a larger interest in owning Proofs, occasions in the past when the Mint provided Proofs for gifts to visitors to the Mint or government dignitaries. Pop 4; 2 in PF-65; 1 in PF-66. (PCGS # 4730) .
Estimated Value $9,000 - 11,000.

Realized $12,650
