Lot 637

1796 Draped Bust Dime. NGC graded MS-64. Well struck with lovely blue, grey and gold toning that is really a treat to view and examine in detail. Great hair and eagle detail as well exemplifies this draped bust, small eagle design. For the collector of early silver coinage, it is always a special feeling to see a nicely struck coin like this, and unlike the 1796 dimes which have the faintest touch of weakness at the centers, this exemplary coin is bold. While 1796 Mint State dimes are not the rarest items in the American pantheon, a number seem to have survived in Mint State condition, perhaps saved as first of the species by visitors from England and Europe. They are very rare this nice, of course, with the grade Mint State 64 have as a feature all the desirability of choice condition, toning, strike, and strong attention from Type Set collectors. Moreover, first year coins have always had a special demand, and a set focused on these issues could find a new highlight with the purchase of this coin. Pop 15; 7 in 65; 8 in 66; 1 in 67. (PCGS # 4461) .

Triple leaf at ST of STATES; 4 berries in wreath. This obverse has the closest date of the 6 varieties of 1796, the first star away from the curl.
Estimated Value $33,000 - 36,000.

Realized $40,250
