Lot 1807

1882-O Morgan Dollar. O over S. PCGS graded MS-64. Old green holder. A white coin. This overmintmark variety was discovered around 40 years ago by A. George Mallis and Leroy Van Allen when they were given the opportunity to examine many of the Morgan dollars that emerged from Treasury Department holdings. Apparently, this variety was created at the Philadelphia Mint when a few dies that were scheduled for delivery to San Francisco were overpunched with an O mintmark and then sent to New Orleans. Today, three die varieties are reported, all of which are scarce in Mint State. This is a correctly lustrous coin for the MS64 grade as well as the issue. The texture is softly frosted, while the absence of toning allows full appreciation of the cartwheel effects (PCGS # 7138) .
Estimated Value $2,200 - 2,600.
